CALM, COMFORT, AND CULTURE

African & Caribbean Foods That Help You Relax and Sleep Better This April

April is here, and we are ready to reset, recharge, and take better care of our minds and bodies. As we recognize both Stress Awareness Month and Autism Acceptance Month, it's the perfect moment to explore how traditional African and Caribbean foods can support relaxation, brain health, and better sleep. And we have the right foods and

ingredients at all Southwest Farmers Market 15 locations.

In our culture, food has always been more than nourishment. It is healing, comfort, and connection. This month let's break it down a bit.

Foods That Help the Body Relax

Many everyday staples found in African and Caribbean kitchens contain natural nutrients that help calm the body and support restful sleep.

Plantains (Ripened or Unripened) rich in potassium and magnesium, plantains help relax muscles and support the nervous system. A warm serving of baked, porridge, or lightly fried plantains in the evening can be both comforting and calming.

Pumpkin Seeds (Egusi)

A powerful source of magnesium, pumpkin seeds help reduce stress and promote relaxation. Add them to soups or enjoy them as a healthy snack.

Beans & Lentils

These staples contain tryptophan, an amino acid that helps the body produce serotonin and melatonin, both essential for sleep.

Coconut (fresh, the milk, or water)

Coconut milk and coconut-based dishes provide healthy fats that support steady energy and soothing digestion, especially helpful before bedtime.

Wait…

We cannot forget these…

Traditional Teas That Calm the Mind

Across Africa and the Caribbean, herbal teas are a trusted way to unwind after a long day or just starting the day. Let's start with one of the best teas sold at Southwest

Farmers Market, Zobo tea.

Hibiscus Tea (Zobo/Sorrel): It's refreshing and supports relaxation.

Lemongrass Tea: They are naturally calming and helps reduce tension.

Ginger Tea: Aids digestion and helps the body settle at night.

Soursop Leaf Tea: This is traditionally used to promote calm and rest.

*A warm cup before bed can become a simple, powerful nighttime ritual.*

A Simple Sleep-Friendly Dinner

Looking for an easy way to start? Sometimes, if not most times, I am looking for an easy way to make a simple sleep-friendly dinner.

You can try this balanced, traditional meal:

Stewed beans + baked plantains + grilled fish + hibiscus tea

I know you will agree with me that this combination provides protein, healthy carbs, and calming nutrients that help the body wind down naturally.

Food That Cares for the Whole Family Matters Daily!

Whether you're supporting a busy household, caring for a neurodiverse or an autistic child, or simply looking to reduce stress, small changes in what we eat can make a big

difference.

This April, let's return to the foods that have always taken care of us.

Because when we eat well, we rest better, and when we rest better, we live better.
